London Underground takes the lead in Data Protection
The challenge
London Underground is one of the largest users of CCTV cameras in the country. Satisfying the provisions of the Data Protection Act, where a person can request to see all video information held on them, can be a time-consuming and expensive effort, especially when releasing the information could potentially expose the coverage of the camera system to persons planning a threat to the network.
Key benefits
- Easily camouflage and mask people and objects
- Reduce the cost and complexity of responding to DPA requests
- Weeks of effort reduced to hours
- Highlight people and objects to enhance security of the Underground
- Payback achieved within one DPA request
The first Data Protection Act request that London Underground received highlighted just how time-consuming and expensive the process can be. Once the man in charge of handling DPA request, had taken legal advice on what he could and could not release, he located a consultant that could process and mask the video tapes that the Underground produces.
It took two weeks to organise the exercise and a further day and a half of the consultant’s time to comply with the organisation’s obligation. The total cost was immense. When London Underground discovered Scyron’s solution for masking and camouflaging video tape, he could immediately see the benefits that could be achieved. The ease of use meant that it could all be done in-house. As London Underground says: “It does exactly what it says on the tin. A dream to work with.”
The result
London Underground has been able to respond in a timely manner to requests with much less effort than that first request. Moreover, the payback period for his initial investment was extremely short.
